Description

At whatever stage of learning you are at, Critical Thinking Skills takes the seemingly baffling art of analysis and makes it not so baffling.

Examples are provided or both 'good' and 'bad' texts so the distinction between the two is made very clear; it then goes on to explain what to do and how to do it well, so it certainly lives up to its claim! But then, sometimes it is imperative to get through the rudiments of a subject - to develop deeper insights into the subject. The only chapters that were useful to me were 1,2,10,12 and I didn't find all the pages useful, only a couple from each chapter.

I bought this book in preparation for uni and it has been very helpful in 'reading between the lines' and clarifying strong and weak arguments. This book is a very excellent read that keeps your attention throughout its pages, it covers a vast amount of information on developing resolute thinking skills, and furthering ones fencing skills when having discourse. Stella Cottrell’s student-centred approach demystifies critical thinking and breaks down a complex subject into manageable chunks. Filled with helpful activities and tried-and-tested tools, this bestselling book shows readers how to construct effective arguments, improve critical analysis, and hone reflective thinking skills. I'm planning to undertake a dissertation - this book was recommended as background material for better analysis of what is required for the project work.

Once purchased, you can view your eBook through the Kortext app, available to download for Windows, Android and iOS devices. Essential for students who are mystified by tutor comments such as 'more critical analysis needed', this is an invaluable tool for anyone wishing to develop advanced skills in this area and learn to apply them to tasks such as reading, writing and note-taking. The book is an instructive source for those who want to ameliorate their writing skills ( for eg, writing an essay) in analytical ways. There are checklists in this book to evaluate your own essays, such checking for internal consistency, logic rules, lines of reasoning, a clear thesis statement etc. These dispositions, which can be seen as attitudes or habits of mind, include openand fair-mindedness, inquisitiveness, flexibility, a propensity to seek reason, a desire to be wellinformed, and a respect for and willingness to entertain diverse viewpoints.

People later in their careers may find it a bit basic but you can consider it as a sort of reference. All used books might have various degrees of writing, highliting and wear and tear and possibly be an ex-library with the usual stickers and stamps. This book helped me immensely with my critical thinking skills, so much so I can see the benefits in other parts of my education. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. All in all, this book is an excellent source to deepen your understanding, reinforce your learning, and develop the skill to read between lines; not to forget effective note-making. In addition, you'll have access to Kortext's smart study tools including highlighting, notetaking, copy and paste, and easy reference export.

Recommending Critical Thinking Skills will help your students develop this important set of skills and improve their grades.
