Before she knows it, she is embroiled in the dark underbelly of her community, where murder abounds. genuinely don’t remember deciding to give this a 4 last night, but i’m gonna go with it because i feel like unconscious reviews are the truest of them all? What role do you think money plays in how society values women’s contributions at home and in the workplace? The motor lit up, a horrible grinding noise drowning out the children’s chatter as it hauled the door open, flooding the garage with autumn-gray sunlight.

How does Finlay’s relationship to her motherhood (and especially single-motherhood) play out throughout the novel? Finlay is really at her wit’s end when her ex husband fires her nanny, she can’t handle it all, not the kids, the house, the overdue bills and unfinished book. If I couldn’t earn a paycheck in the next three months, Guy would find a way to take my kids and give them to Theresa, too. Delia stood in the kitchen rubbing her fingers over the patchy wet stubble where she’d scratched herself with the scissors.Finlay Donovan is Killing It was a refreshing take on the mystery/suspense genres and a really fun read that I think anyone will enjoy. It had used words like idyllic and peaceful to describe the neighborhood, because in the glossy pages of a real estate magazine, no one can see through the windows to the exhausted stabby mommy, or the naked sticky toddler, or the hair and blood and coffee on the floor. The mystery was interesting, but it wasn't written in a compelling manner, definitely not the page turner like Gone Girl or The Girl On the Train, or even The Wife Upstairs. Finlay has a lunch meeting at Panera with her literary agent, Sylvia to discuss her newest book and she needs to arrive on time.

She’s behind on her bills, and now her ex-husband is engaged to their former real estate agent and is gearing up to fight for custody of their two kids. This eavesdropping lady just happens to have a husband she would like to get rid of, so she slides a note under Finlay’s plate as she bids goodbye to Sylvia, making her an offer she is tempted to consider because the novel isn’t the only thing that is late-all of her bills are overdue too!And then one day someone overhears Finlay talking to her agent about her books and gets the mistaken impression that Finlay is a contract killer. Before long, Finlay has a body to bury, a new nanny/roommate/partner-in-crime named Vero, a possible hot bartender boyfriend, a possible hot police office boyfriend, but only if she can avoid being arrested for a murder she didn’t commit and avoid being killed for getting mixed up with the wrong people.

As funny as this book was, it also managed to be a clever mystery without ever feeling overwrought and also kept me guessing throughout, although the beauty of this book is the thrill of the ride. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors. At the bar, she finds the husband with another woman, and, after distracting the other woman, she ends up talking to him and switching their drinks. I am not ashamed to admit that 98% (yes I did the math) of what I read is romance, so I can safely say this is not my usual read. Her YA debut, Nearly Gone , was an Edgar Award finalist and winner of the International Thriller Award.

And if to make things worse, Finlay starts writing a novel about what happened with them, and it sells a massive advance for two books once she sends it to her editor. The same Guy who’d done too many keg stands and puked in the back seat of my car back in college was now the attorney who golfed with the judge on Saturdays and had cost me my weekends with my kids. She really is an author with a looming deadline, who is broke after her divorce and is in a custody battle with her ex-husband. Her acclaimed young adult novels include Nearly Gone, Holding Smoke, The Suffering Tree, and Seasons of the Storm. The tape peeled away from the roll with a loud shriek, and I held the strands of clipped hair against the side of Delia’s head while wrapping the tape around her like a hideous silver crown until the hair was (mostly) secured in place.

Finally, the story works because at the heart of the tale is one big mystery and several smaller ones that were unpredictable. Until the wife goes missing and the police are looking for the missing man and now his wife as well. It ends with a cliff-hanger in anticipation of the second book Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead which is expected to be published in February 2022. Murder, mayhem and - maybe - a touch of romance, the warm, hilarious and instantly-lovable Finlay Donovan series is perfect for fans of Emily Henry, Dial A for Aunties and Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Abandoning the wad of paper towels, I stormed from the kitchen and lowered my voice to a harsh whisper.

If mornings are messy and crazy, you need to get up earlier and start to prepare the night before such as laying out clothes, shoes, backpacks for the next day. If you enjoy light-hearted entertainment and a good chuckle with your mystery, then Finlay and her nanny/accountant Vero, are the hitwomen for you! In chapter 32, Julian recites a quote inspired by the principles of Hanlon’s razor: “Let us not attribute to malice and cruelty what may be referred to less criminal motives. She might be able to focus on her writing again, rather than worrying about how to make her life work. And will truth be stranger than fiction as Finlay suddenly finds all the inspiration for her novel she could ever need.
