High performance is never just about one aspect, whether it be natural talent, luck, timing or hard work. It is such a complicated industry to work in, with many varied opinions and different leaders, but many friends.

Full of valuable principles with real-world relevance to people's everyday lives' Toto Wolff'So many different lessons from so many remarkable people' Adam Peaty Drawing on conversations with. Being too much of a geek to be in to sports so hadn't ever heard of Jake Humphrey and wasn't interested in the book until seeing Adam Peaty had a testimonial on the cover. The way it is written and reflected back to the podcast, that is also brilliant, will be with me for a long time. I know some people say that you come to things when it is the right time in your life, but boy do I wish that I had found either this book or the podcast earlier. There are a few interesting thoughts and techniques mentioned as well as some unique stories from sports people.

And they draw on cutting-edge psychology to explain why these methods have such a transformative impact. Jake Humphrey is one of the UK's best-In their chart-topping High Performance podcast, Jake and Damian interview some of the world's leading athletes, businesspeople and thinkers about what makes them excel. Having joined CBBC in 2001, by 2005 he was hosting Sportsround, covering major international sporting events such as the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, the World Cup from Germany and the Cricket World Cup from Antigua. High Performance is a cumulation of knowledge that Humphrey and Hughes have accumulated from the time that they have spent doing their podcast: High Performance. This books gives very detailed lessons in ways and which you can high preform in all aspects of your life.

I would honestly say that listening to the podcast and having this book is actually the best combination. If you want to stop making excuses and take responsibility for your life, I recommend you read this book. Take any success story - take any famous person - who is famous because they are successful, and they will regale you for hours with stories about their training programme, the sacrifices, the early morning starts…. After a period of serious incidents and service review I read this book to get myself back on track.

It's full of valuable principles and approaches shared by teams and athletes across professional sports, with real-world relevance to people's everyday lives.

The only criticism is that at times the author’s own ego seems to come out in places that are not necessarily as useful as the book ascribes these parts to be. I enjoyed the tone of this book and the way that each chapter was a standalone lesson so you can easily pick the book up after time away and not need to 'follow' what was previously discussed. Drawing on interviews with leading athletes and entrepreneurs, they uncover the nine hidden principles that high performers use to excel: from taking absolute responsibility for their situation, to working out their non-negotiable ‘trademark behaviours’, to getting the very best out of their teammates. While the book does not have every guest as an example, I found it to be a more digestible way to understand some core concepts that anyone who achieves at the top of their chosen field. This is the second book based on a podcast that I’ve read, and on this evidence it will be the last (the other one was “Talking Sopranos”).Unfortunately, there are thousands of books out there which perpetuate the myth of being “special”, being a winner, achieving your goals and battling against the odds, but there aren’t many books that encourage you to be realistic about your aims, understand and accept your limitations, recognise when the juice simply isn’t worth the squeeze, and learn to appreciate what you already have.
