One thing that sets "The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries" apart from other books in the genre is its ability to appeal to a wide range of readers. This is an engaging mystery of two girls, Elizabeth Sancho and Dido Belle, which is set in 18th-century London. A brilliantly written, action packed and exciting 1700's detective adventure story told through a perspective and voice rarely explored in fiction during this time, let alone children's fiction, two young.

They are both Black which, personally, I find inspiring as not many books include Black people let alone Black women. Her father is to play Othello, a character in a play by William Shakespeare – he is the first Black man to do so, making it a momentous performance in history. The book opened my eyes about the slave trade because I had heard of it before but didn’t realise just how serious it really was.The story provides a backdrop for children to understand the history of transatlantic slavery and its subsequent legacies, with a focus on Black resistance and positive representation. And when their eyes meet in the audience of the Drury Lane theatre one night, both girls are sure they've seen something suspicious on stage. I’m sure that we need more books where race isn’t a subject to talk about, as people need to be represented how they are and not what or who, but the time that this book is set works with the idea well.

I would definitely recommend this book to others as the mystery kept me coming back and the end didn’t disappoint! I heard Lizzie and Belle recommended on the radio for teenagers by a grandmother who said she couldn’t stop reading it herself.I highly recommend this book to young readers as the story is easy to read with its chain of events that stirs up curiosity in the reader until its end. A gripping historical mystery set in the heart of Georgian London’s theatreland, the story is inspired by real Black British figures and brings to life a crucial period in Britain’s past. A thrilling adventure, where two Black children battle Elemental spirits to save Georgian London from a sleeping sickness.
