The first novel in a chilling new series by Darren Shan, author of the New York Times bestselling Cirque Du Freak series, will keep readers turning page after horrifying page. On opening his bedroom door, Grubbs finds not the bedroom but Hell and the dead bodies of his father, mother and younger sister, all murdered by Lord Loss and his demons. He can also feel some genuine attachment towards others and is genuinely devastated when Juni Swan is killed.

But then, by the very end of the book, Grubbs has another great growth of maturity and becomes responsible and interesting again. This first book had elements of mystery and suspense as the hero begins to suspect his uncle suffers from an ancient curse, a curse that may have led to tragedy for his family.Despite this it turns out that he is actually one of the weaker Demon Masters, though he later becomes the strongest after Grubbs, Bec and Kernel remake the universe. Then afterward, at the cave, before and after Bec, Grubbs, Kernel and Beranabus time travel through the power of the Kah Gash. It is more of a middle-grade book so it's obviously written for a younger audience and the writing style reflects that.

Lord Loss is next featured when Grubbs, Kernel, Kirilli Kovacs, Timas Brauss, Shark and the werewolf nicknamed 'Moe' enter his world to escape the demon master of the previous world. The movie rights to Cirque Du Freak were bought by Universal, and the first movie (which combined elements from the first three books in the series) was released in October 2009, starring newcomer Chris Massoglia as Darren Shan, along with a wide array of established stars such as Josh Hutcherson, John C Reilly, Salma Hayek, Willem Defoe and Ken Watanabe. His sadistic side is arguably caused by his biology and unique appetite rather than his actual personality. The death of Grubb’s friend Loch around book 3 and Bill-E’s involvement was a haunting, horrifying piece of writing and Bill-E’s death several books later as a result was a brilliant example of a story tying together while also being a deeply moving moment In keeping with the traditions of epic fantasy 2 new POV characters are introduced. It was released on DVD and Blu-Ray in February 2010, and is usually available stream on at least one of the major streaming platforms.
