All used books might have various degrees of writing, highliting and wear and tear and possibly be an ex-library with the usual stickers and stamps. I had never done any gardening before we went to Somerset and had certainly never even thought about garden design. Fish’s aspiration to cultivate that most precious and slow-growing quality—the fundamental character of a good garden. Margery Fish is entertaining and amusing but in this day and age, there is no place for the constant mentioning of Walter, the absolute domineering, tyrannical gobshite of a husband that not only disallowed Margery any autonomy in the garden, but actively delighted in wrecking her plans by pulling up plants, throwing soil from his projects on her work and generally berating her for every idea mentioned! Almost twenty years later, in 1956, Walter’s wife looked back and chronicled what they did with their two acre plot in the classic gardening book We Made a Garden by Margery Fish.

I had to pull out my phone so many times to Google them to get an idea of how they looked; a visual glossary of some sort would be a nice addition. As another reviewer noted, in the words of LP Hartley, "the past is a foreign country; they do things differently there," and perhaps it is those glimpses into the domestic life of a far off land that compelled me to keep going: a lady in her long dinner dress and satin slippers perched precariously, balanced with a watering can to water the tops of her walls where trails of greenery fall.Every weekend, when my sisters were navvying to make a garden round the little house we built, I sailed off on my bicycle to play golf. It's just so lighthearted reading full of good ideas based on long time gardening experience and of course witty remarks about the relationship with her husband, their disagreements and who actually got it right. When I went back to work full time and then with my mother's illness, the garden was mostly neglected. The battle with horsetails will never end, the butterfly bush mostly feeds bugs, the escalonia requires a firm hand to prevent it taking over the world. For younger bookworms – and nostalgic older ones too – there’s the Slightly Foxed Cubs series, in which we’ve reissued a number of classic nature and historical novels. Her prose is practical rather than lyrical, and you probably should enjoy gardening to enjoy this book.In this beautiful and timeless work, she recounts the trails and tribulations, successes and failures, of her venture with ease and humour. Used books have different signs of use and might not include supplemental materials such as CDs, Dvds, Access Codes, charts or any other extra material. She is writing this book after his death and can barely repress her delight at finally being able to plant certain things he had always forbidden her. Slightly Foxed brings back forgotten voices through its Slightly Foxed and Plain Foxed Editions, a series of beautifully produced little pocket hardback reissues of classic memoirs, all of them absorbing and highly individual. At the time of purchase, I didn’t know that almost opposite, hidden in the lightly wooded valley below, down a long wooded driveway lay the Priory.

Now with a space of her own, Margery threw herself wholeheartedly into the making of a cottage garden, making up in enthusiasm and energy what she lacked in knowledge. But I didn't but it for that, I bought it because it's a beautiful, beautiful book and because I wanted inspiration for my allotment. I started reading this book with the idea of garnering inspiration as I begin planning this year's garden. This might have been first published in the fifties but the fact its still available is testimony to how good it is.
