Accessed via “Nigeria’s civil war 50th anniversary, a reflection”, The Guardian, 5 February 2020: https://guardian. A descendant of colonist who belittle our continent and undermine our experiences to doge responsibility for their despicable actions.

At McGill, I am looking forward to taking a variety of courses in history and political science exploring a range of areas such as African history, international relations, and indigeneity. In A Letter Away From Asaba, Efemini makes it known that history does not remain a thing of the past. Onome is an international student from Nigeria studying law at King’s College London whilst Chioma lives in Asaba, Nigeria. Thank you Retrospect Journal HCA for recognising the importance of this book and announcing it on your platform. The talented Claudia Efemini has written a beautiful novel that shines a lot on an important topic that, unfortunately, not many are knowledgeable about or have had the chance to be informed on.This is far from easy, and they await a series of hurdles in ways they least expect that, in contrast, try to ensure that the victims of the massacre die in vain.

I started working on this novella in December 2021 so it is amazing to finally visualise the book and be offered an artistic representation of my manuscript.I would have liked some more background about their relationship together and how they have grown - we get to know them when they are adults and see that relationship go through ups and downs, which is great.

Claudia’s writing is moving and deeply informed, shedding light on one of Nigeria’s greatest tragedies. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It is a book that I wrote during the course of my first year at Edinburgh and I am still quite shocked that it will be transformed into print next year.I am looking forward to joining the team of incredible student journalists to contribute to the production of cultural pieces for the newspaper during the course of my exchange year at McGill. The last sentence of this book written in Claudia’s acknowledgments is as follows; “through reading this historical fictional narrative, I hope it inspires people to seek out their history and immerse themselves into crucial historical discourse.
