I want to like the detail of Jeremy’s “Humiliation Sheets,” spreadsheets where he tallies day-to-day embarrassments like being laughed at or ignored, but every time they’re brought up it’s… super weird? It can recite all of Jeremy's lines for him, instantly do his homework, and teach him how to drive a car despite not having a license. Of course, the book is a little bit sci-fi, so heaps of it are made up, but this book is a quite memoir-eque fictional novel in that it seems to be how Ned has worked out his high school dorkiness and confusion and angst about not getting with girls. Because really, if you take out the Squip, it’s just another high school coming of age story that is full of overdone high school tropes.

Jeremy sees rapid progress at school, gaining friendship with Rich and skipping class to make out with Brooke, another popular girl, but slowly degrades his friendship with Michael.Fleeing from Jake and the girls, Jeremy runs into a bathroom, where he finds Michael, who has crashed the party. In the musical Rich set a fire and he burned down the house because of some kind of conflict with his squip; either he tries to shut it off and it turns against him or it randomly goes berserk and malfunctions. After the SQUIP changes its mission, Jeremy offers to give Christine a ride home and discovers that Michael has met a girl named Nicole, whom he knows from chatting online. The second half of the book, after the squip actively encourages Jeremy to swear, has the squip mentally censoring the words so that only a couple letters remain. The musical was commissioned by Two River Theater in 2011 as part of their new play development program.

Book Christine is clearly supposed to be a person of substance, but that’s lost in her constant slutshaming and negativity and bizarre overreactions. Later, I found out that there’s a musical adaptation of Be More Chill; I listened to it and liked it a lot. This modern-day classic by New York Times best-selling author Ned Vizzini contains photos from the Broadway musical; an introduction by the Broadway showcreators, Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz; and an afterword by New York Times best-selling author David Levithan. Jeremy gets the money for the squip by stealing beanie babies from his Aunt Linda (who we never see again afterwards) and selling them online instead of using money he got from his bar mitzvah.

Characters that aren’t in the musical: Jeremy’s mom, Nicole, Chloe’s friends (I don’t remember their names) and Aunt Linda. A selection of lines from Mark Jackson, Classmate to Jeremy: “Yeah, I’m in this dilly-deal”/” Midsummer Night’s Drizz- eam. BE MORE CHILL is an interesting discourse on popularity/being "Cool" and the pros/cons of technology.

Jeremy sees another SQUIP-enhanced teen lose his mind, but it's not until a SQUIP-directed grand gesture designed to charm Christine backfires that he decides it's time to make his own decisions. Rich finds Jeremy at a school Halloween party and reveals to Jeremy that the object he's after is known as a SQUIP, a supercomputer in the form of a pill that can communicate directly to the brain. Jeremy’s mother (in my opinion) is a better parent and would be a better character to have for Jeremy than his dad. Christine rejects him and is upset by the public spectacle, and Jeremy is kicked out of the play and replaced as Lysander for breaking character. Defo some stand out songs:'Michael in the bathroom', 'Guy I'd kinda be into', and 'the smartphone hour'.

I gave the book version of this by Ned Vizzini a solo star awhile back, but this week I have to review and summarize over 500 Title Commitments and have determined this musical might be the best thing I've ever listened to. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the show's previews were postponed to July 7, 2020, and the opening night was moved to July 17, 2020. Jeremy himself makes a comment later in the book to his crush, who was heartbroken about being cheated on by her ex-boyfriend, "I reassure, 'We're all dicks, if you give us the chance. And then [Christine]’s gone as if, you know, a giant dragon coiled its way up from the floor of the theater and decided to take her for its mate.Charlie Rosen’s brilliant orchestration for Be More Chill features several unconventional instruments - Theremin, Vocoder, etc. Be More Chill is a musical with original music and lyrics by Joe Iconis, and a book by Joe Tracz, based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini.
